Gross metropolitan product is a monetary measure of the total economic output, the market value of all final goods and services produced, within a statistical metropolitan area over a given period, functioning as the metropolitan area equivalent of the gross domestic product of a nation. In the European Union, Eurostat calculates it annually for metropolitan regions classified under the NUTS 3 territorial system, while in the United States the Bureau of Economic Analysis, part of the Department of Commerce, calculates it annually for metropolitan statistical areas, excluding micropolitan statistical areas and other smaller regional classifications.
