The JPMorgan Emerging Market Bond Index, or EMBI, is a family of three bond indices maintained by JPMorgan Chase that track total returns on traded external debt instruments, meaning foreign currency denominated fixed income, issued in emerging markets. The family includes EMBI Plus, covering dollar denominated Brady bonds, loans, and Eurobonds; EMBI Global, an expanded version with relaxed liquidity requirements; and EMBI Global Diversified, which caps the weight of countries with larger debt stocks to limit concentration. JPMorgan publishes the indices to serve as a benchmark, giving investors a definition of the emerging market external currency debt market, a list of the instruments traded within it, and a compilation of their terms.
