The Freightos Baltic Index measures global container freight rates by calculating spot rates for 40 foot containers across twelve global trade lanes, issued jointly by the Baltic Exchange and Freightos. It is reported around the world as a proxy for shipping company stocks and as a general bellwether for the shipping market, and it distinguishes itself among the many freight rate indices in use as the only one issued daily. First launched as a weekly index in early 2017 under the name Freightos International Freight Index, it moved into wide use as the Freightos Baltic Index from 2018 and was converted into a fully daily index in February 2021; it is also the only freight index currently regulated as IOSCO-compliant by the European Securities and Markets Authority.
