The Wholesale Price Index measures the price of a representative basket of goods traded between businesses, tracking price movements at the wholesale level that reflect supply and demand in industry, manufacturing and construction, distinct from the retail-focused Consumer Price Index. Some countries use it as their principal inflation gauge; the Philippines has historically relied on wholesale price index change as a central measure of inflation, though India has since shifted its own primary inflation measure to a consumer price index. The United States does not publish a wholesale price index as such, using its own Producer Price Index for the equivalent purpose instead.
