James Tobin (1918-2002) was an American economist at Yale University who served on the Council of Economic Advisers under President Kennedy. He contributed to Keynesian macroeconomics with portfolio selection theory and the Tobin's q ratio, and proposed the Tobin tax on international currency transactions. He won the 1981 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.
