William Stanley Jevons (1835-1882) was an English economist and logician, one of three economists who independently originated marginal utility theory in the 1870s marginalist revolution, alongside Leon Walras and Carl Menger. His Theory of Political Economy (1871) applied mathematics to economics and argued that value derives from marginal utility rather than labor. He also wrote on the coal question and on business cycle theory linked to sunspot activity.
