The Bank of Mexico, known as Banxico, is Mexico's central bank, monetary authority, and lender of last resort, created on August 25, 1925 and formally inaugurated on September 1 of that year to unify a banking system left fractured by the Mexican Revolution and a history of competing private note-issuing banks. Headquartered in Mexico City, it holds the exclusive constitutional authority to mint coins and print banknotes, and its principal legal objective is to maintain the stability of the purchasing power of the peso through monetary regulation and management of the exchange rate.
