Banque du Liban, Lebanon's central bank, was established on August 1, 1963 and became fully operational on April 1, 1964, taking over functions previously carried out by the Banque de Syrie et Liban, founded in 1920. Headquartered in Beirut, it issues the Lebanese pound, maintains monetary stability, regulates money transfers, and safeguards the soundness of the banking sector, with monetary and credit policy set through its Central Council; the bank also holds substantial non-banking assets, including 99.37 percent ownership of Middle East Airlines and a dominant shareholding in the Intra Investment Company, owner of Casino du Liban.
