Benelux is a politico-economic union and formal intergovernmental alliance of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. A customs agreement among the three states was signed in 1944 and took effect in 1948, and a full Economic Union treaty followed in 1958, entering into force in 1960, with a renewed treaty signed in 2008 and effective in 2010. Its original aim was to eliminate customs barriers between the three countries and ensure free movement of people, capital, services and goods, and its cooperation today extends to security, sustainable development and the economy. It is regarded as the first example of postwar economic integration in Europe and served as a model for the European Economic Community and later the European Union.
