The Central Bank of Brazil is Brazil's monetary authority, created on December 31, 1964 through the merger of three earlier bodies, the Superintendencia da Moeda e do Credito, the Bank of Brazil, and the National Treasury. Headquartered in Brasilia, it is responsible for maintaining the stability of the national currency's purchasing power, setting the benchmark Selic interest rate through its Monetary Policy Committee, and promoting financial inclusion across the country. A 2021 law made the bank formally independent of the federal government, with its president elected to serve a term that does not automatically coincide with the presidency's own.
