Italy's Ministry of Economy and Finance, known as MEF, was created in 2001 through the Bassanini reform, formally implemented by the second Berlusconi government, which merged the former Ministry of the Treasury, Budget and Economic Programming with the Ministry of Finance. It is headquartered at the Palazzo delle Finanze in Rome and is responsible for overseeing Italy's economic policy, public investment and government spending.
