The Monetary Authority of Macao is the currency board and de facto central bank of Macau, established on December 20, 1999 following the territory's handover from Portugal to China and headquartered in the Sao Lazaro area of Macau. It advises on monetary and financial policy, oversees the monetary and foreign exchange markets, works to maintain internal monetary stability and external solvency, manages currency reserves for the Macanese pataca and monitors the stability of the financial system.
