The National Bank of Serbia in its present form was established in 2003, succeeding the National Bank of Yugoslavia, though the institution traces its lineage back to 1884 and the founding of the Privileged National Bank of the Kingdom of Serbia, one of several Belgrade-based predecessor institutions that mirror the country's complex twentieth-century history. Headquartered on Nemanjina Street in Belgrade, it implements monetary policy, holds the monopoly on issuing Serbian banknotes and coins, protects price stability, promotes financial system stability, manages foreign exchange reserves, regulates and oversees payment transactions, and supervises and licenses banks.
