The New York Stock Exchange was founded on 17 May 1792, when twenty four brokers signed the Buttonwood Agreement outside 68 Wall Street, setting a floor commission rate and binding the signers to trade preferentially among themselves. It grew into the world's largest stock exchange by market capitalization of listed companies, nicknamed the Big Board, and is headquartered at the New York Stock Exchange Building in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan.
