The Reserve Bank of Vanuatu is the central bank of Vanuatu, established on January 1, 1981 as the Central Bank of Vanuatu following the country's independence and renamed to its current form in May 1989. Wholly state-owned, it regulates currency supply and exchange, supervises domestic and offshore banking, advises the government on monetary policy, and issues the Vanuatu vatu, which it introduced in 1981 to replace the New Hebrides franc and the Australian dollar; it holds foreign reserves of about 260 million dollars.
