Second Bank of the United States

Historic Trading Companies and Banks

The Second Bank of the United States was the second federally chartered national bank of the United States, authorized under the Madison administration and operating from February 1816 to January 1836 out of its headquarters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its formal charter name, set out in section 9 of the act of Congress that created it, was The President, Directors, and Company, of the Bank of the United States. Unlike the other banks then operating in the country, which were chartered within and confined to a single state, it was authorized to open branches in multiple states and to lend money directly to the federal government.
