The Treasury is Australia's national economic and fiscal policy department, one of only two Australian government departments, alongside the Attorney-General's Department, that have existed continuously since Federation. It was established in Melbourne in January 1901 following the federation of the six Australian colonies, later relocated to Canberra, and today prepares the federal budget, advises on economic and fiscal policy, and oversees market regulation across sixteen associated agencies.
