The United States Department of the Treasury was established by act of Congress on 2 September 1789 to manage federal government revenue. It executes currency and coin production, collects federal taxes through the Internal Revenue Service, manages the national debt, supervises parts of the banking system and advises the President and Congress on fiscal policy; during the 2008 financial crisis and the 2020 pandemic recession, it administered the largest emergency spending and lending programs in the country's peacetime history alongside the Federal Reserve.
