The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) is an autonomous statutory body under India's Ministry of Finance, established in 1999 to regulate and develop the country's insurance and re-insurance industries. Headquartered in Hyderabad, Telangana after relocating from Delhi in 2001, it licenses insurers and re-insurers, protects the interests of policyholders, and promotes competition and efficiency in the insurance market, governed by a ten-member body of five full-time and four part-time members appointed by the Indian government.
