France's Autorite des marches financiers was established August 1, 2003 by the Financial Security Act, merging three predecessor bodies, the securities regulator Commission des operations de bourse founded in 1967, the Conseil des marches financiers, and the Conseil de discipline de la gestion financiere. Headquartered near the Place de la Bourse in Paris, the independent public authority safeguards investments in financial instruments and other savings vehicles, ensures investors receive adequate information, and works to keep French financial markets orderly, holding voting membership in the European Securities and Markets Authority. Marie-Anne Barbat-Layani has chaired the AMF since 2022.
