The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) is Hong Kong's independent statutory regulator for securities and futures markets, established in May 1989 in the aftermath of the 1987 stock market crash to foster orderly markets, protect investors and promote Hong Kong as an international financial centre. It regulates market participants such as brokers and fund managers, supervises exchanges and trading services, authorizes investment product offerings, and oversees the corporate activities of listed companies, funded through levies on transactions at the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Futures Exchange plus fees from market participants.
