Fondo Interbancario di Tutela dei Depositi

The Fondo Interbancario di Tutela dei Depositi (FITD) is Italy's interbank deposit guarantee fund, established in 1987 to protect depositor funds at member banks and guarantee deposits up to 100,000 euros per depositor under European Union rules. It transitioned from an ex-post to an ex-ante funding system following European Union directive changes in 2014 as part of the broader Banking Union framework, and it has intervened to support troubled institutions including Banca Tercas, Cassa di Risparmio di Cesena and Banca Carige, alongside a voluntary scheme established in 2016 for recapitalizations outside its mandatory funding obligations.
