The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is the principal competition and consumer protection regulator of the United Kingdom, launched in shadow form on October 1, 2013 and beginning full operations on April 1, 2014 as a non-ministerial government department. It was created by merging the former Competition Commission and Office of Fair Trading, which were abolished, and its mandate covers promoting competitive markets, tackling unfair business practices and protecting consumers; since late 2024 it has also held new digital markets regulation responsibilities under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024. Headquartered in London's Canary Wharf with additional offices in Manchester and Darlington, it reports to the Department for Business and Trade.
