Australian Competition and Consumer Commission

Regulatory and Standard-Setting Bodies

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is Australia's chief competition and consumer protection regulator, formed in 1995 through the merger of the Australian Trade Practices Commission and the Prices Surveillance Authority and operating within the Department of the Treasury. It enforces the Competition and Consumer Act 2010, safeguarding consumer and business rights, monitoring industry pricing, and preventing anti-competitive conduct, with standing to bring enforcement action in the Federal Court. Headquartered in Canberra and led by a chair appointed under the responsibility of the Treasurer of Australia, the ACCC also plays an educational role informing consumers and businesses of their obligations under the law.
