The Comissao do Mercado de Valores Mobiliarios (CMVM) is Portugal's securities market regulator, an independent public agency funded through supervision fees rather than the state budget, headquartered on Rua Laura Alves in Lisbon. Established on May 10, 1991, it oversees securities and other financial instruments and markets, sanctions infractions of securities law, works to develop Portugal's financial instruments markets, handles and mediates investor complaints, and assists government finance ministries with regulatory oversight. It holds voting membership on the European Securities and Markets Authority's Board of Supervisors and belongs to Portugal's National Council of Financial Supervisors.
