Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth, a 1920 essay by Ludwig von Mises later expanded into the 1922 book Socialism, opened the socialist calculation debate. Mises argued that a centrally planned economy with no private property in the means of production has no genuine market in capital goods and so no way to calculate the relative value of alternative uses of resources, making rational economic planning impossible without market prices.
