The European Central Bank is the central bank for the euro, established on 1 June 1998 and headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany. It began exercising its full powers on 1 January 1999, when the euro was introduced, and its primary mandate, set out in the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, is to maintain price stability across the euro area, which it now defines as an inflation rate close to but below two percent over the medium term.
