The European Securities and Markets Authority is an agency of the European Union based in Paris that replaced the Committee of European Securities Regulators on January 1, 2011, becoming one of three European Supervisory Authorities in the European System of Financial Supervision alongside its counterparts for banking and insurance. Its mandate is to protect the public interest by contributing to the short, medium, and long-term stability and effectiveness of the EU financial system, improving how markets function, safeguarding market integrity, and strengthening investor protection.
