The Mekong River Commission is an intergovernmental organisation established on 5 April 1995 by Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam to promote and coordinate the sustainable management and development of the water and related resources of the Mekong River basin for the mutual benefit of its member countries. It succeeded earlier cooperative bodies, the Mekong Committee that had operated from 1957 and the Interim Mekong Committee that followed from 1978, and it works through a Council of government ministers, a Joint Committee of senior officials and a Secretariat of roughly sixty staff based in Vientiane, Laos.
