Gustav von Schmoller was the leading figure of the Younger German Historical School and the dominant organizer of academic economics in Wilhelmine Germany, holding a chair at the University of Berlin from 1882 and shaping the Verein fur Socialpolitik's program of empirical social and labor research. His 1883 review of Carl Menger's methodological work opened the Methodenstreit, the public dispute over whether economics should proceed by abstract deduction or by inductive historical study, and his multi-volume Grundriss der allgemeinen Volkswirtschaftslehre (1900-1904) remained the school's most complete theoretical statement.
