The European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) is a European Union financial regulatory agency established under Regulation (EU) No 1094/2010 and beginning operations on January 1, 2011 as successor to the Committee of European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Supervisors. Headquartered in Frankfurt am Main, it is one of three European Supervisory Authorities, alongside the European Banking Authority and the European Securities and Markets Authority, and it supports the stability of the financial system, works to ensure market transparency, and protects insurance policyholders and pension scheme members by developing regulatory standards, issuing guidelines and making decisions that bind national competent authorities and financial institutions within its regulatory scope.
